A cashmere scarf or wool beanie is an investment you can enjoy for a decade — if you treat it well. The good news: caring for fine knits is simple once you know the basics. Here is the Stycozy method.
1. Wash gently, and less often
Cashmere and wool are naturally odour-resistant, so you rarely need to wash them. When you do, hand-wash in cool water (never hot) with a small amount of gentle wool detergent or baby shampoo. Soak for a few minutes, swish softly, and never wring or twist.
2. Dry flat, never hang
Press the item gently between two towels to remove excess water, then reshape it and lay it flat to dry away from direct heat and sunlight. Hanging a wet knit stretches it out of shape permanently.
3. De-pill with care
Pilling (small fibre balls) is normal with soft natural fibres and does not mean poor quality. Remove pills gently with a cashmere comb or a fabric shaver, working in one direction. Your knit will look renewed.
4. Store folded, protect from moths
Always fold knits — never hang them — and store in a breathable cotton bag. Add cedar blocks or lavender sachets to deter moths. Make sure items are clean before long-term storage, as moths are attracted to body oils.
5. Rest between wears
Give your favourite beanie or gloves a day off between wears. Natural fibres recover their loft and elasticity when allowed to rest, keeping them fuller and warmer for longer.
Quick do & don’t
- Do use cool water and gentle detergent
- Do dry flat and store folded
- Don’t machine wash on a warm cycle or tumble dry
- Don’t hang or wring your knits
